It’s a totally different experience using the Leica M8 digital rangefinder compared to a normal digital SLR (single-lens reflex). With manual focusing, it really forced you to concentrate on your subject and the placement of the subject within your frame. It takes a while before I could get used to the direct see through view finder.

You feel a certain sense of understated simplicity that forced upon you the meticulous exploration of the subject with every click of the shutter. With digital SLR, there’s not much challenge in photography as almost everything could be automated and with high fps (frame per second), you could just choose the best image later. With digital SLR, you shoot first and think later but with Rangefinder cameras, you think before you shoot! Now I think I know why Leica fans are so passionate about their rangefinders.

Below are some photos taken with the Leica M8 with the 45 minutes allocated to me. At the end of 45 minutes, I was almost a convert and with a heavy heart I returned the camera.

This photographic outing was jointly organized by PhotoMalaysia.com and Schmidt Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd. Schmidt Marketing is the official distributor for Leica camera in Malaysia.

I have seen some very nice landscape photo taken with Leica M8, so I just wanted to test it for myself.

Conclusion: This is a very well made digital camera with top notch quality lens. I would go all out to purchase one if not for the high cost of ownership and for the fact that I already owned a Canon 1DMk3 and Nikon D2Xs systems. Image quality is comparable if not better than the Canon or Nikon systems. Please note that the testing was not done scientifically and was based on visual output only, which for me was the most important criterion for buying a camera.
