1. Sony Playstation Portable, PSP 3000

The new Sony PSP 3000

The new Sony PSP 3000

The new PSP 3000 looks awfully similar to the older PSP 2000 but will feature 2 or 3 new features that might be worth upgrading. However if you are the owner of the first generation PSP 1000, the upgrade decision is really a no-brainer. The 2 most worthy new features are:

(i). A new 4.3″ TFT 640 x 272 pixels, 16.7M colors display with a anti-reflective coating. This should translate into sharper, brighter, better outdoor viewing, and more colorful images. Compared to the PSP 2000, the new PSP 3000 has twice the color gamut, five times the contrast ratio and, a response time that’s twice as fast. This improvement alone is worth upgrading.

(ii). A built-in microphone. This will enable the PSP 3000 to be used as a VOIP device though the use of the Skype service.

For Sony Press Release go to here. The PSP 3000 will go on sale worldwide on 15th. Oct 2008. Estimated Price: USD294. The current Slim & Lite PSP model is retailing at RM799 per unit at Sony Style Malaysia. So the new PSP 3000 should be around RM1,000 or less per unit.

2. iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod Touch & The App Store

The App Store* comes to iPod Touch.

The App Store comes to iPod touch.* (*Access to the App Store requires the iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch)

Since the iPhone 3G is not officially available in Malaysia yet, the iPod touch is the next greatest thing since sliced bread. The iPhone 2.0 software update was made available for iPod touch since last month and the killer application that comes with the upgrade is the App Store. Since iTunes Store are not yet available for Malaysia, the next best thing is the App Store. With App Store, you just need to register with a valid credit card once, and every time thereafter you can start to purchase any applications like software upgrade, productivity apps and games from App Store.

Quoting from Apple website: “iPod touch applications are unlike anything you’ve ever seen on a mobile device. The world’s best developers are creating applications to leverage the groundbreaking technology in iPod touch, such as the Multi-Touch interface, the accelerometer, real-time 3D graphics, and 3D positional audio. It’s all part of the iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch.*” For more details go to here.

Other new features include:

  • Push Email with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
  • Updated Language and Keyboard Support
  • Contacts Search
  • Multiple Calendars
  • Scientific Calculator
  • Improved Mail Attachment Viewing
  • New Mail Management Features
  • MobileMe

Some of the games available from App Store are quite fun to play. Some are chargeable and some are free. The most interesting game I found is the Super Monkey Ball from SEGA. It’s priced at USD9.95 per download and the goal of the game is to guide a monkey enclosed in a bubble to negotiate many levels of obstacle course to earn points. The accelerometer function of the iPod touch will enable it to respond to your movement just by tapping or tilting (forward, backward, left & right) the device.

And for USD0.99 you can purchase the Koi Pond application that will enable you to gaze into a pond of crystal clear water with playful Koi fishes swimming through its shallow depths. When you run your fingers across the cool surfaces of the pond, you can even see water ripples away from your touch. It’s so interactive that you think the fishes are real. You can also download games like Othello, Shanghai Mahjong, Sudoku, 21 Pro:Blackjack and Quick Poker for free.

The iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch is available now in Malaysia. The update price is USD9.95.
